It’s a good bet that you haven’t spent as much time in your car over the past few months as you used to. While you probably don’t expect this to have an impact on your ability to drive, it turns out that it might. According to a survey conducted in the UK, 20% of drivers believe their driving skills have deteriorated since the start of the COVID 19 pandemic. The most common complaints were about being forgetful of safety practices such as signalling and checking mirrors, while others forgot which side the fuel tank was on, or had to think extra hard about what the function of the individual pedals. To help mitigate the risk, here are some things to watch out for when you, once again, venture behind the wheel.
Take a Moment Before Heading Out
Spending as much time as we have indoors, watching screens, and the four walls around us eventually takes a toll on the eyes. Before you start the engine and go, take some time to look at objects in the distance. Try to read signs and readapt your focus to the longer distance. Also, take time to run through a quick checklist in your mind, locating the controls on your dashboard, reminding yourself what each pedal does, and what each gauge or indicator tells you. It may seem like an unnecessary step, but your brain has been focused on other things lately, and it needs a refresher.
Resist the Urge to Speed
It is a fact that there are fewer people on the roads, especially during traditional rush hour times. Yet, anecdotally, police forces around the country are seeing more single-car accidents. One possible explanation could be that when the streets are empty, drivers tend to go a little faster and take more chances. As you drive, take note of your speed and the posted speed limits. Are you subconsciously weaving in and out of traffic, or taking turns more quickly than usual because of the availability of space around you? You may not even realize you are doing it, and you’re probably not alone.
Be More Aware of Others
Whether you feel your driving skills are rusty or not, it is likely that others do. Be aware, when driving, and keep your eyes open for other drivers who may be less diligent than you. Give everyone, including cars, trucks, cyclists and pedestrians, plenty of space, and leave yourself time to get where you’re going.
