If you are photographer or a videographer you should look into various insurance policies to protect your business. Some common policies include general liability insurance, a business owner’s policy (BOP), professional liability insurance, and workers’ compensation insurance.
General liability insurance
A good videographer or photographer is going to interact with people most of the time. General liability insurance will help pay for physical injuries your clients sustain. For example if the client falls in your studio your general liability policy will help cover the medical bill. Go to YouTube and look for videos of weddings, and other events where someone got hurt by an overzealous photographer and you’ll see what I’m talking about. The General liability policy also covers the damage you cause to the client’s property. For example if your tripod falls and hits your client’s car, it will cover the damages.
Business Owner’s Policy
If you are a videographer and photographer, you should protect your business. It is usually recommend that you bundle general liability insurance and commercial property insurance together in a Business Owners Policy, or BOP for short. In addition to the protections contained in the general liability insurance, a BOP also protects your property and equipment. For example a BOP will reimburse you if you accidentally dropped and broke your $7,000 camera. Simply put, a business owner’s policy protects your clients, and your property.
Professional Liability Insurance
Some have found having professional liability insurance comes in very handy. This insurance protects you against lawsuits filed by clients for your errors in delivering a quality service. In a fast passed industry like this one, accidents happens. This insurance will protect you if you accidentally failed to record the audio at the wedding or you missed the vows at the wedding ceremony.
Workers’ Compensation Insurance
If your business has employees, Workers’ Compensation Insurance is usually required. It covers the medical expenses and lost wages caused by workplace injuries. If you are a sole proprietor, you should have a separate business owner’s insurance that pays out for injury and property damage.
